Farmdrop: the ethical grocer

By Bryony Moore

The future of traditional farming in the UK is unclear. In 2014, there were 167,000 farms in the UK and this has dropped to 126,000 this year.

The rise in popularity for businesses such as Farmdrop are giving the industry another chance to thrive. Farmdrop is an app connecting customers in Central London to farmers elsewhere, delivering locally sourced goods to your front door.

Manager Damian Hind insists their mission is to “fix the food chain”. Rather than getting your groceries from the local supermarket, Farmdrop offers premium products from local farmers who abide by the highest animal welfare standards.

A further £7m has been invested in the company, allowing them to expand out of London next year to serve the ever-growing conscious community.

Hind claims: "We have paid out £5m to sustainable farmers since 2014. Average sales for the most popular farmers selling through Farmdrop was £140,000 in 2017-18.” This is more than double the average income for conventional UK farmers.
