Five foods that count towards your five-a-day

By Adam Clancy

It can be tough to make sure you hit the recommended five-a-day of fruit and vegetables, but could you be achieving it without knowing?

Baked beans

They contain tomato sauce but are also made form haricot beans, so effectively you can count them as two. Just half a can counts but be careful of the sugar levels.

Mushrooms

They’re a fungus, aren’t they? But they’re also a vegetable, and just a handful of them will count towards the magic number.

Guacamole

You nacho lovers are going to love this even more. Guac contains lots of avocado, and if you add salsa you will get tomato and onions too.

Mushrooms, baked beans. It's almost a Full English fry-up!

Olives

They can be added to almost anything, so you should consider adding them to your diet. They are high in salt though, so don’t be piggish.

Chickpeas

You can eat as many of these as you like but just be wary that they only count as one serving. Also be mindful of your health if you’re adding lots of oil or deep-frying them.
