five spices to spice up your life
By Adam Clancy
Is your food the definition of bland? Here are five spices we believe will pack your home cooked dishes to the brim with flavour.
Ghost Chilli
The hottest chilli in the world, the Bhut Jolokia or ‘Ghost Chilli’ as it’s popularly known as, will really add a kick to your curry dishes. Not for the faint-hearted.
Bird’s Eye Chilli
The Kanthari Mulagu Chilli or ‘Bird’s Eye Chilli’, is very hot but apparently can control cholesterol levels. Might not be bad with fish I’m guessing.
Ambergis
This spice is valuable and rare, probably because it’s made of squid beaks. King Charles II favourite breakfast was allegedly eggs and ambergris. If it’s good enough for a king, it’s good enough for us!

Try these if you dare. Chilli's will turn up the heat.
Sumac
Made from dried berries of the namesake plant, it has a sour citrusy flavour. Will add some zest to your seafood dishes, which is why we can’t get enough of it.
Grains of Paradise
Used in Caribbean and African cooking, these grains will add a hot, aromatic flavour. A fan favourite of Coldplay and George Ezra.
